Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.52%

Canada stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Consumer Staples, Real Estate and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.52%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX), which rose 3.91% or 3.33 points to trade at 88.51 at the close. Meanwhile, BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB) added 3.66% or 0.44 points to end at 12.46 and Vermilion Energy Inc. (TSX:VET) was up 3.29% or 0.62 points to 19.46 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Mullen Group Ltd. (TSX:MTL), which fell 10.90% or 3.52 points to trade at 28.76 at the close. Southern Cross Gold Consolidated Ltd (TSX:SXGC) declined 7.89% or 0.73 points to end at 8.52 and Perpetua Resources Corp (TSX:PPTA) was down 4.68% or 1.13 points to 23.04.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 595 to 356 and 81 ended unchanged.

Shares in Perpetua Resources Corp (TSX:PPTA) fell to 52-week lows; falling 4.68% or 1.13 to 23.04.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.41% to 14.85 a new 1-month high.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.07% or 2.75 to $4,010.65 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.14% or 0.14 to hit $103.13 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.09% or 0.11 to trade at $116.61 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.71, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.23% to 0.64.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 101.66.
