Why is Vistra stock surging today?
Vistra stock surged 5.7% in pre-open trading after the company released its third-quarter 2026 results before the bell, delivering a powerful combination of profit growth and a raised forward outlook that overshadowed a revenue shortfall.
The power generation company posted revenue of $6.35 billion for the quarter, falling short of the analyst consensus estimate of $6.79 billion, though revenue still increased 28% year-over-year from $4.97 billion in Q3 2025; net income came in at $1,140 million and Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA reached $2,378 million, representing more than 50% growth versus the prior-year period.
The forward guidance was arguably the bigger catalyst. For fiscal 2026, Vistra raised and narrowed its Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA guidance to a range of $7.1 billion to $7.5 billion, with the midpoint of $7.3 billion representing an increase from prior guidance, while also providing Adjusted FCFbG guidance of $4.3 billion to $4.7 billion; for fiscal 2027, the company initiated Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA guidance of $7.7 billion to $8.5 billion, with a midpoint of $8.1 billion, alongside FCFbG guidance of $4.3 billion to $5.1 billion.
Additionally, the company noted it had executed approximately $6.7 billion in share repurchases since November 2021, and its Board of Directors authorized an additional $1.5 billion of share repurchases.
On the analyst front, BMO Capital Markets had trimmed its price target on Vistra from $210 to $188 the prior day while maintaining an Outperform rating, with the new target still implying substantial upside from recent trading levels.
The pre-market bounce comes after a bruising stretch for the stock. Vistra’s shares had reached a 52-week low just the prior session, with the stock having declined sharply over the past week and year, though analysis had suggested the company may be undervalued. The broader market provided a mixed but broadly supportive backdrop, with the S&P 500 edging up 0.1% and the NASDAQ gaining 1.4%, while the Dow Jones pulled back 1.1%.
Taken together, the combination of blowout profit growth, a raised 2026 EBITDA outlook, and the inaugural 2027 guidance range gave investors a concrete earnings floor to anchor against, triggering a relief rally from deeply oversold levels. Jim Burke, president and CEO of Vistra, highlighted the operational execution behind the results, noting that the generation and retail teams delivered through one of the hottest calendar third quarters on record.
