Why is Samsung Electronics stock plunging today?
Samsung Electronics stock slid nearly 6.0% to ₩205,000 on Thursday, dragged down by a sweeping investor exodus from semiconductor shares following weak overnight U.S. earnings and a Democrat sweep of the U.S. midterm elections.
While markets initially cheered the Democrat sweep-- where they took both chambers of Congress-- the event gave way to fears that new regulatory scrutiny could slow the pace of AI data center construction and, by extension, demand for high-bandwidth memory and server chips.
Adding to pressure on tech, chipmakers ARM and Qualcomm clocked middling earnings in the September quarter, raising more uncertainty over long-term artificial intelligence demand for chips.
The developments compounded existing pressure on Samsung. The company has been unable to execute meaningful share buybacks due to South Korea’s financial-industrial separation regulations — a constraint that disappointed investors when Q3 results were released last week — leaving the stock without a key technical support mechanism that rival SK Hynix deployed to boost confidence.
Adding to the company-specific friction, a sixth labor union was formally registered at Samsung today, deepening internal divisions between the semiconductor and finished-products divisions over performance pay.
The broader market environment amplified the selling. South Korea’s KOSPI slumped 5%, triggering a trading halt, while Nasdaq 100 futures slid 0.7% in Asian trade.
