Why is Micron Technology stock sliding today?
Micron Technology stock slipped 2.7% in pre-open trading today after Samsung Electronics released its third-quarter 2026 earnings before the U.S. market open, delivering results that fell short of the elevated expectations set by the memory sector’s recent boom.
Although Samsung posted a record quarterly operating profit of 107.44 trillion won — up roughly 783% year-over-year — its semiconductor division profit of 106.5 trillion won came in just below analyst estimates, and net profit of approximately 75.1 trillion won missed the consensus of around 87 trillion won by a wide margin.
The disappointment is particularly sharp given that Micron had surged nearly 5.9% on Wednesday following SK Hynix’s record-breaking quarter, which had fueled expectations that all major memory makers were firing on all cylinders. Samsung’s stumble on the bottom line, alongside a lack of clarity on its promised shareholder return program, acted as a cold-water moment for investors who had bid up the entire memory sector.
SanDisk and SK Hynix ADR also fell in U.S. premarket trading alongside Micron, confirming the selloff was sector-wide rather than company-specific.
A technical death cross that formed recently — with Micron’s short-term moving average crossing below its longer-term average — added a further layer of caution for technically-oriented traders.
The broader market is providing little cushion today, with the Nasdaq declining over 1%, the S&P 500 off 0.3%, and the Dow Jones slipping 0.2%, creating an unfavorable backdrop for high-beta semiconductor names. Micron also has a quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share payable today, which can create modest mechanical downward pressure on the share price.
Despite the pullback, Citi maintains a Buy rating with a $1,300 price target, citing expectations of a sustained DRAM and HBM supply shortage through 2027 and 2028.
Taken together, Samsung’s earnings miss has effectively unwound a portion of the enthusiasm generated by SK Hynix’s results just 24 hours earlier, reminding investors that the memory sector’s record profitability cycle is not without execution risk. Micron trades at $957.16 today, still well above its 52-week low of $192.59, but the inability to hold above the psychologically significant $1,000 level continues to weigh on near-term sentiment.
