Why is Performance Food Group stock surging today?
Performance Food Group stock surged 13.5% in afternoon trading to reach $109.51 after the Richmond, Virginia-based foodservice distributor reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 results before the market opened, with adjusted earnings per share of $1.32 beating analyst consensus estimates and rising nearly 12% from the same period a year ago. The standout profitability metric was adjusted EBITDA, which grew 10% year-over-year to $528 million and landed at the upper boundary of the company’s own guidance range — a signal that management’s margin improvement strategy is gaining traction.
Gross profit expanded 8.5% to approximately $2.2 billion, with the company crediting a favorable mix shift toward higher-margin independent foodservice customers, vendor rebates, promotional incentives, and contributions from recent acquisitions. Revenue of $18.02 billion rose 5.5% year-over-year and was broadly in line with expectations, while total case volume increased 4.2%. Management also reaffirmed full-year fiscal 2027 net sales guidance of $72.5–$73.0 billion, providing additional confidence to investors who had grown cautious after the stock fell more than 16% over the prior three months. The broader analyst community remains constructive on the name, with a consensus rating of "Moderate Buy" and an average price target well above today’s trading level.
The earnings catalyst landed on a day when U.S. equity markets were already in a strongly risk-on mood. A decisive outcome in the U.S. midterm elections removed a layer of political uncertainty that had weighed on sentiment, propelling the Dow Jones up more than 3% and the S&P 500 up nearly 1.8%, giving cyclically sensitive consumer and distribution stocks an additional tailwind.
Taken together, the combination of a clear earnings beat, robust margin expansion, a reaffirmed full-year outlook, and a surging broader market created an unusually favorable backdrop for PFGC shares — allowing the stock to reclaim ground lost during a prolonged pre-earnings selloff and move meaningfully back toward its 52-week high of $117.48.
