Why is Yum! Brands stock surging today?
Yum! Brands stock surged 3.6% in pre-open trading after the company released its third-quarter 2026 results before the bell, delivering adjusted earnings per share of $1.56 that exceeded the analyst consensus of $1.53, while also completing the divestiture of Pizza Hut during the quarter — a transaction that generated an approximately $1.7 billion pre-tax gain and lifted GAAP EPS to $5.92.
The headline EPS beat was reinforced by strong operational momentum at KFC, which posted 7% unit growth with 955 gross new units opened and system sales growth of 6% for the quarter.
Investors also took comfort in CEO Chris Turner’s direct signal on Taco Bell’s trajectory: "Since the end of September, Taco Bell U.S. has been outpacing the [quick-service restaurant] industry on same-store sales growth" — a key reassurance given that the brand’s same-store sales had fallen 4% during Q3 due to a multistate cyclospora outbreak that had driven a sharp but temporary drop in foot traffic.
Digital system sales surpassing $9 billion with a digital mix of 64% added another forward-looking positive to the report.
The broader market provided little tailwind for today’s move. U.S. equity futures were mixed heading into the session, with the S&P 500 essentially flat and the Dow under pressure following mixed earnings and guidance from Apple overnight.
Investors were also holding back from adding broad risk with U.S. midterm elections underway, keeping the macro backdrop cautious. Separately, Yum China reported its own Q3 results today, also beating profit estimates, which provided a modest positive halo across the broader Yum brand ecosystem.
Taken together, a clean earnings beat, the strategic milestone of completing the Pizza Hut divestiture, and management’s forward guidance on Taco Bell’s rebound proved more than enough to lift YUM sharply against a largely directionless broader market, underscoring the stock’s company-specific catalyst as the dominant driver of today’s pre-market rally.
