Why is IREN stock surging today?

IREN Ltd stock surged 18.1% in pre-open trading after the company reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 results that significantly beat analyst expectations, reversing a steep prior-session decline driven by concerns over Microsoft’s scrutiny of neocloud data center projects.

Total revenue came in at $228 million, up 66% sequentially, topping the consensus estimate of approximately $221 million, while AI Cloud revenue nearly tripled to $200 million — well above the roughly $185 million Wall Street had anticipated — and carried an 86% gross margin.

The net loss narrowed sharply to $263 million from $684 million in the preceding quarter, and adjusted EBITDA expanded to $66 million, representing a 29% margin versus 14% in the prior period.

A key point of concern embedded in the report was the company’s disclosure that its $4 billion-plus ARR target has been pushed from year-end 2026 to January 2027, potentially extending into February, due to a customer-requested network infrastructure upgrade at its Texas data center — a change tied to Microsoft’s requirements for its newest frontier AI models.

However, the revenue backlog grew 22% sequentially to $20.3 billion, with roughly two-thirds backed by investment-grade counterparties, and operating ARR doubled to $1 billion, helping reassure investors that the underlying demand picture remains intact.

Bernstein SocGen had also reaffirmed its Outperform rating on the stock ahead of the print, even as it trimmed its price target.

The pre-market rebound comes after IREN hit a fresh 52-week low of $17.155 in Thursday’s regular session, when shares were hammered alongside neocloud peers following a Bloomberg report that Microsoft was tightening oversight of data center projects involving IREN, Nebius, and Nscale, and reconsidering new agreements with third-party infrastructure providers.

The broader NASDAQ is advancing 1.5% today, providing a supportive backdrop for high-beta AI infrastructure names, while the S&P 500 adds 0.4%.

Together, the combination of a decisive earnings beat, a sharply narrower net loss, strong AI Cloud margin performance, and a deeply oversold technical setup following days of heavy selling has fueled today’s outsized pre-market recovery, with IREN attempting to reclaim ground lost during one of the most punishing stretches the neocloud sector has seen in recent months.
