Why is Microsoft stock surging today?

Microsoft stock is rising 4.0% in pre-open trading today after the technology giant delivered a fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings report that comfortably beat Wall Street’s expectations on both the top and bottom lines, with Azure cloud revenue emerging as the standout driver.

Revenue for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 reached $92.3 billion, up 19% year-over-year, while GAAP diluted EPS came in at $4.92, up 32% from the prior-year period.

The standout figure was Azure cloud revenue, which grew 48% year-over-year to $33.2 billion, exceeding both the company’s own guidance of roughly 44–45% growth and analyst estimates, and accelerating meaningfully from the prior quarter.

Several supporting factors amplified the post-earnings enthusiasm. The company forecast stronger Azure growth of 49–50% for the December quarter, reinforcing its confidence in cloud demand. Microsoft’s commercial backlog reached $677 billion, up 73% year-over-year, signaling robust forward demand for its cloud and AI services.

On the analyst front, Barclays raised its price target on Microsoft to $610 from $600 while maintaining an Overweight rating on the stock. Additionally, CEO Satya Nadella said on the earnings call that Copilot’s daily users increased by 50% year-over-year, while user satisfaction improved by nearly 20% quarter-over-quarter to an all-time high.

The broader market backdrop is mixed but does not detract from Microsoft’s company-specific momentum. The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at its October 28 meeting, and Microsoft stock rose more than 4% on its earnings news.

By contrast, rival Alphabet plunged after missing its third-quarter earnings and revenue estimates and reporting negative free cash flow, making Microsoft’s beat all the more striking within the megacap technology peer group.

Today, the Nasdaq is down 1.1% and the S&P 500 is off 0.2%, underscoring that Microsoft’s pre-market strength is entirely driven by its own results rather than any broad market tailwind.

Taken together, the combination of a decisive earnings beat, accelerating Azure growth that dispelled lingering capacity-constraint concerns, a bullish Q2 outlook, and a prompt analyst price target upgrade created a powerful, company-specific catalyst.

Microsoft shares are on track for their best trading day in more than three months, with the stock pushing above its prior 52-week high and reflecting renewed investor conviction in the company’s AI-driven cloud growth trajectory.
