Why is IREN stock surging in after-hours trading today?
IREN Ltd stock surged 7.3% in after-hours trading today after the company posted fiscal Q1 FY27 results that exceeded expectations on multiple fronts, with AI Cloud revenue nearly tripling sequentially to $200 million and total revenue reaching $228 million — topping analyst consensus of approximately $221–$222 million.
The net loss also narrowed substantially to $263 million from $684 million in the prior quarter, while adjusted EBITDA of $66 million came in above the roughly $64 million estimate, offering investors a clearer picture of the company’s improving unit economics as it transitions away from Bitcoin mining toward AI infrastructure.
Adding to the positive tone, IREN disclosed that its revenue backlog grew 22% sequentially to $20.3 billion — approximately two-thirds of which is with investment-grade counterparties — and confirmed that its $4 billion-plus annualized recurring revenue target is fully contracted and fully funded.
The company also announced an expanded contract with a leading frontier AI lab signed after quarter-end, reinforcing the demand narrative. Bernstein SocGen, which had maintained its Outperform rating on the stock ahead of the print while cutting its price target to $55 from $100, had already signaled continued long-term conviction in the thesis despite near-term execution risks.
The after-hours recovery stood in stark contrast to the regular session, during which IREN shares were under severe pressure after a Bloomberg report revealed that Microsoft was tightening oversight of neocloud data center projects involving IREN and peers, stepping back from deals it deemed too risky. That headline weighed on the entire neocloud sector during market hours. The broader market offered no relief, with the S&P 500, Dow Jones, and NASDAQ all finishing modestly lower on the day.
Taken together, a deeply oversold stock entering earnings day — having hit a fresh 52-week low of $17.155 intraday — combined with a decisive revenue beat, a near-tripling of AI Cloud revenue, and confirmation of a fully funded growth pipeline proved sufficient to overwhelm the day’s negative headlines and drive a sharp after-hours recovery.
