Why is ING Groep stock sliding today?

ING Groep NV stock slipped 1.2% to trade at €28.98 after the Amsterdam-based bank delivered a Q3 2026 earnings report that fell short of analyst forecasts on both the top and bottom lines.

The bank’s net result of €1.85 billion, while representing a 3.5% year-on-year increase, came in well below the consensus estimate of approximately €1.97 billion, and GAAP EPS of €0.65 missed expectations by roughly €0.02. Total income of €6.23 billion also trailed the median analyst forecast, as higher interest rate volatility weighed on other income components.

The earnings shortfall was compounded by cost pressures on two fronts: operating expenses rose to €3.12 billion, exceeding the consensus estimate, while loan loss provisions climbed to €403 million — surpassing the top end of the analyst consensus range.

Partially offsetting the disappointment, ING announced a €1.9 billion capital distribution package comprising a €1.65 billion share buyback commencing immediately and a €0.25 billion cash dividend payment due in mid-January 2027. Management also reaffirmed its full-year 2026 outlook, projecting total income above €24.5 billion and a return on tangible equity exceeding 15%, which helped limit the stock’s losses.

On the broader market front, U.S. equities were mixed on the day, with the S&P 500 edging slightly lower and the NASDAQ declining more sharply, reflecting a cautious tone in global risk appetite that provided little support for European financial stocks.

The day before earnings, ING had also received the ECB’s 2026 SREP outcome, which kept its CET1 capital requirement unchanged at 11.12% for 2027 — a neutral regulatory signal that did nothing to shift sentiment ahead of the results.

Taken together, a profit miss driven by rising provisions and costs was the dominant force behind today’s move, outweighing both the generous shareholder return announcement and the reaffirmed full-year guidance.

With the stock already trading well below the analyst consensus price target of approximately €34.25, the market’s reaction reflects a "sell the news" dynamic following a quarter that failed to clear the bar set by elevated pre-results expectations.
