Why is Flagstar Bank stock sliding today?

Flagstar Bank stock slid 6.83% in pre-open trading today after the bank reported third-quarter 2026 earnings that fell well short of Wall Street expectations, with net income attributable to common stockholders of just $0.01 per diluted share against analyst forecasts of roughly $0.07 per share.

Total revenues came in at $530 million, missing the consensus estimate of approximately $545 million. Net income dropped sharply to $12 million from $34 million in the prior quarter, reversing much of the profitability progress the bank had made earlier in 2026.

The miss was compounded by a deteriorating pre-earnings backdrop. Several analysts had already trimmed their price targets in the weeks leading up to today, with RBC Capital cutting its target to $13 from $15, Cantor Fitzgerald lowering to $16 from $17, and JPMorgan reducing its target to $14 from $15.50 while maintaining a neutral stance.

EPS estimates had declined by nearly 30% over the 60 days prior to the report, signaling that market participants were growing increasingly cautious — yet the actual result still fell short of the already-reduced bar.

Non-interest income also slipped quarter-over-quarter, adding to concerns about revenue diversification.

Taken together, the combination of a significant earnings miss, declining non-interest income, a sequential drop in net income, and a pre-existing wave of analyst price target reductions created a powerful negative catalyst. With the stock already near its 52-week low of $10.57, today’s pre-market move reflects investor concern that Flagstar’s recovery trajectory is proving slower and more uneven than previously anticipated.
