Why is Finnair stock sliding today?

Finnair stock fell 3.6% to trade at €4.06 today as the Finnish airline released its full interim report for January–September 2026, with the detailed figures failing to deliver any upside surprise beyond what investors had already absorbed in a sharp rally on October 13.

The Q3 results themselves were objectively strong: comparable operating profit rose approximately 65% year-on-year to €84.0 million, revenue climbed 14.2% to €953.2 million, and passenger numbers grew 7.0% to 3.5 million. Cargo revenue also jumped sharply, benefiting from northern route traffic flows.

However, these figures had already been telegraphed in Finnair’s preliminary disclosure and guidance upgrade two weeks prior, leaving little room for fresh enthusiasm. Fuel costs rose 14.5% in the quarter, and management offered cautious language on securing hedging at current levels for 2027, adding uncertainty to the forward outlook.

The broader analyst community remains skeptical of the stock’s valuation at current levels. The consensus rating stands at "Strong Sell," with an average 12-month price target of €3.53 — well below today’s trading price — and Barclays maintaining a Sell stance with a €3.20 target.

The OMX Helsinki index has also been under pressure in recent sessions, providing an unfavourable backdrop for the stock’s reaction to earnings day.

Taken together, today’s decline reflects a textbook post-earnings reversal: the substantive catalyst — the guidance upgrade and preliminary Q3 beat — was already priced in on October 13, leaving the full report release as a trigger for profit-taking, compounded by elevated fuel cost concerns and a broadly cautious analyst stance on the name.
