Why is Yum China stock sliding today?
Shares of Yum China stock slid 3.6% in pre-open trading after the KFC and Pizza Hut operator in China delivered a mixed third-quarter 2026 earnings report before the market open, with a profit beat failing to offset investor disappointment over a revenue shortfall and softening same-store sales.
Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.91, topping the consensus estimate of $0.88, but revenue of $3.48 billion fell short of the $3.5 billion Wall Street had expected, representing just a 2% increase on a constant-currency basis despite an 8% reported gain year over year.
The most closely watched metric — same-store sales — declined 3% year over year, with management attributing the pressure to tough comparisons against last year’s delivery platform subsidies and adverse weather in August.
CEO Joey Wat noted that same-store transactions still grew for the 15th consecutive quarter, and operating margin expanded for the 10th straight quarter to 13.0%, but the headline same-store sales miss weighed heavily on sentiment.
On the positive side, the company opened a quarterly record 692 net new stores, raised its full-year 2026 net new store target to over 2,400, boosted its share repurchase authorization by $1 billion, and declared a $0.29 per share dividend.
The broader market offered little support, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones both trading in negative territory while the Nasdaq posted a modest gain — a mixed backdrop that did little to cushion the stock’s earnings-driven decline.
Analyst sentiment heading into the print had already shown some caution, with the stock accumulating three negative EPS revisions against just one positive revision over the prior 90 days, and one firm having downgraded its rating to "Hold" even as the consensus remained "Moderate Buy" with an average price target of $59.21.
Taken together, the revenue miss and same-store sales decline proved to be the decisive factors pulling the stock lower in pre-market, outweighing the profit beat, record store expansion, and shareholder return initiatives — a reminder that in a competitive Chinese restaurant market, top-line momentum and foot-traffic trends remain the metrics investors watch most closely.
