Why is Volvo stock sliding today?

Volvo AB Class B fell 1.6% to trade at 305.2 SEK as Citi downgraded the Swedish truck and commercial vehicle maker to Neutral from Buy, simultaneously cutting its price target to SEK 318 from SEK 376 — a reduction of approximately 15%.

The bank’s analyst argued that the margin improvement story in Volvo’s core truck business, which had underpinned the previous bullish stance, is no longer playing out as expected.

The crux of Citi’s concern is that headline truck margins are being flattered by a set of temporary factors — including lower research and development costs that are expected to reverse in 2027, tariff refunds, and a catch-up effect from Section 232 tariffs — masking a weaker underlying profitability picture.

With the stock trading at roughly nine times 2027 estimated EV/EBIT, the bank sees no compelling valuation discount to justify a more constructive stance, projecting a total return of under 7% including dividends.

The downgrade compounded pressure from Volvo’s Q3 2026 earnings report, in which both revenue and earnings per share came in below analyst consensus, prompting a wave of price target reductions from other major banks in the days prior.

Volvo was the weakest constituent in the OMXS30 index on the day, which itself traded modestly lower. Swedish manufacturing PMI data for October showed a healthy reading, offering little macro relief for the stock. Meanwhile, U.S. equity markets were in positive territory, indicating the selling in Volvo was driven entirely by company-specific sentiment rather than any broad risk-off move.

The combination of a high-profile Buy-to-Neutral flip from a major global bank, a deeply cut price target, and lingering disappointment from a below-consensus earnings report created a concentrated wave of selling pressure, leaving Volvo trading near the lower end of its intraday range and well off its 52-week high of 374.5 SEK.
