Why is Verbund stock sliding today?
Verbund AG Kat. A stock slid 5.7% to trade at €64.90 after the Austrian hydropower giant reported a severe deterioration in its nine-month 2026 financials, with Group net profit collapsing 43.5% to €684.8m and EBITDA falling 29.0% to €1.498bn — results that came in well below expectations and prompted an immediate downward revision to the company’s full-year guidance.
The earnings release, published before the opening bell, also revealed that free cash flow before dividends had plunged nearly 90% to just €78m, underscoring the depth of the operational stress.
The root cause of the earnings shock was a dual blow: historically low water supply across European rivers and a sharp decline in the average price realized for hydropower generation. Hydropower output dropped 20.2% to 15,984 GWh, with the hydro coefficient for run-of-river plants reaching 0.61 — a level 39 percentage points below the long-term average — while the average achieved sales price fell €33.8 per megawatt-hour year-on-year to €79.7/MWh.
Verbund simultaneously narrowed its full-year 2026 guidance, now targeting EBITDA of approximately €2.12bn and an adjusted Group result of around €1.05bn, superseding prior ranges.
The broader market provided little cushion. U.S. equity markets were mixed, with the S&P 500 essentially flat and the Nasdaq modestly lower, offering no sector-wide tailwind for European utilities.
Verbund’s heavy dependence on hydropower — which accounts for the vast majority of its electricity generation — left it uniquely exposed to the continent’s driest conditions in decades, a structural vulnerability that peers with more diversified generation mixes did not face to the same degree.
The combination of a steep earnings miss, a guidance cut, and a near-total evaporation of free cash flow gave investors little reason to hold through the uncertainty, sending the stock to €64.90 — near its session low and well within the lower half of its 52-week range of €54.20 to €70.00.
