Why is Trainline stock sliding today?

Trainline stock slid 4.0% to trade at 191.98p after Peel Hunt downgraded the stock to “hold” from “buy” and cut its target price to 220p from 254p.

Peel Hunt said it believes Trainline is “undervalued on a 17% FCF yield” but that the discount is “unlikely to close soon,” citing a slip in Italy, the risk that U.K. fares freeze again, weak foreign travel and open questions around the Competition and Markets Authority review and Great British Railways.

The move comes following Trainline’s first-half results which, despite several bright spots, raised fresh doubts about the near-term growth trajectory of the company’s core UK business.

Group revenue fell 1% to £233 million for the six months to August 2026, hurt by a lower UK take rate stemming from changes in the industry’s refund policy, even as adjusted EBITDA climbed 7% to £100 million and the International consumer segment turned profitable for the first time.

The analyst community’s response added to the downward pressure. Deutsche Bank kept its Buy rating but trimmed its price target to £5.50 from £5.80, while both JPMorgan and Barclays maintained their Underweight ratings, cutting their respective targets to £1.75 and £1.85.

Analysts questioned whether the improvement in International profitability could be sustained, and flagged that a government-mandated rail fare freeze could limit UK revenue growth in the coming financial year.

The unresolved Great British Railways app tender — which carries implications for Trainline’s competitive positioning as an independent aggregator — remained a further cloud over the investment case.

On the broader market front, the FTSE 250, of which Trainline is a constituent, faced a cautious session, with macro sentiment shaped by diverging moves across global indices.

The stock is trading near the lower end of its intraday range of 190.22p to 197.90p, and sits well below its 52-week high of 280p, though it remains above its 52-week low of 178p, suggesting the market is still searching for a durable floor.
