Why is Tencent stock surging today?
Tencent stock surged nearly 6% to HK$425.2 on Thursday, touching an intraday high of HK$429, after the company’s Hunyuan research team officially launched Hy4, its most advanced large language model to date, marking a significant leap in Tencent’s open-source AI ambitions.
The model, released on November 4, features 770 billion parameters and introduces vision capabilities for the first time, enabling fine-grained image processing, complex chart analysis, and enhanced long-range reasoning — capabilities that analysts say push it into the ranks of the world’s top open-source models.
The launch was met with immediate institutional support. CICC reiterated its Outperform rating on Tencent with a price target of HK$666, arguing that the company’s strategic focus is shifting beyond model iteration toward building AI Agent ecosystems, where its scale and platform advantages compound over time. Jefferies also reaffirmed its Buy rating with a HK$711 price target, highlighting Hy4’s superiority in long-horizon tasks and visual understanding versus peers.
Both endorsements reinforced conviction that Tencent’s AI investment cycle is beginning to yield tangible competitive differentiation, particularly through the integration of Hy4 into its WorkBuddy enterprise platform.
The stock also benefited from a powerful macro tailwind. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rallied approximately 3% on the day, with the Hang Seng Tech Index surging over 5%, as Chinese internet names broadly re-rated higher following an overnight jump in the Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index. The catalyst was the outcome of U.S. midterm elections, in which Democrats recaptured both chambers of Congress, creating a divided government that markets interpreted as a meaningful reduction in regulatory and trade policy risk for Chinese technology companies.
