Why is Haidilao stock surging today?

Haidilao stock surged 6.2% to HK$9.91 on Tuesday after controlling shareholder, chairman, and CEO Zhang Yong repaid in full the principal and all accrued interest on a loan the company had extended to him — doing so ahead of the original repayment schedule.

The announcement, released on the evening of November 2, immediately lifted sentiment heading into Tuesday’s open, with shares gapping higher from the outset.

On October 12, Haidilao disclosed that it had provided Zhang Yong with a short-term loan of up to the Hong Kong dollar equivalent of RMB 100 million, at a rate of one-month HIBOR plus 0.6%, designated solely for his personal financial arrangements. That disclosure alarmed investors — who were already sensitive to governance concerns following earlier stake sales — and sent the stock plunging toward its 52-week low of HK$8.93.

With the loan now fully settled just 21 days into the 30-day term, and Zhang confirmed to remain in all his leadership roles, the key source of uncertainty has been removed.

The broader Hong Kong market provided a mildly constructive backdrop, with the Hang Seng Index advancing roughly 0.45% on the day and Haidilao named among the leading blue-chip gainers in morning trading.
