Why is Shoe Zone stock plunging today?
Shoe Zone PLC stock is plunging 23.4% today after the value footwear retailer published a pre-market full-year trading update for the 53 weeks ended 3 October 2026, disclosing a swing to an adjusted loss before tax of approximately £1.0m against a profit of £2.4m in the prior year, and confirming that no dividend would be paid for the full year.
Revenue for FY2026 came in at £142.4m, down 4.5% from £149.1m the prior year, with the company attributing the decline to operating 18 fewer stores and a continued drop in consumer confidence amid general negativity in the UK economy.
The earnings deterioration was compounded by the full-year impact of the National Insurance increase and a further rise in the National Living Wage, which were only partly offset by an improved product margin. Alongside the trading update, the company also announced the formal completion of its share buyback programme, which had been running since 11 August 2026.
The programme, which repurchased 1,193,145 ordinary shares at an average price of 74p for a total outlay of approximately £887,000, has now concluded — removing a consistent source of market demand for the stock.
Management struck a cautious tone on the near-term outlook, noting that trading conditions are expected to remain subdued and that the start of the Autumn/Winter season has been slower than expected, with that weakness carrying into the new financial year FY2027. The company is also monitoring rising container prices and a weakening of Sterling against the Dollar, as well as higher fuel costs, all of which could negatively impact future trading, while awaiting the outcome of the Government’s October 2026 Budget.
On the broader market, the FTSE 100 was called around 56 points lower at the open on 27 October as investors turned cautious ahead of Wednesday’s UK Autumn Budget and the upcoming Federal Reserve policy decision. This risk-off backdrop offered no support for small-cap consumer discretionary names, and with the buyback programme no longer in place to provide a price floor, the combination of a loss, a cancelled dividend, a deteriorating sales trend, and a cautious management outlook proved overwhelming for Shoe Zone shareholders.
