Why is PetroChina stock sliding today?
PetroChina shares fell 1.5% to HK$10.65 on Tuesday, dragged lower by a steep overnight decline in global crude oil prices after reports emerged that the U.S. and Iran were signalling openness to diplomatic talks aimed at ending the prolonged Middle East conflict.
Brent crude tumbled sharply in the prior session as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian indicated his government had been granted greater authority to pursue negotiations, while U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that Iran wants to "make a deal." The prospect of a resolution — and a potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz — sent oil prices to their lowest levels in weeks, directly pressuring the earnings outlook for integrated oil producers like PetroChina.
Still, oil prices rose marginally on Tuesday after a report said the U.S. had attacked Qeshm island.
PetroChina was not alone in its decline: sector peers CNOOC and Sinopec also slid in Hong Kong trading as the oil price drop hit Chinese energy names broadly. In contrast, the wider Hang Seng Index edged higher by roughly 0.3–0.5%, reflecting gains in non-energy sectors that benefited from the cooling fuel costs, making PetroChina and its peers clear underperformers within an otherwise resilient market.
Still, the oil and gas producer reported bumper earnings last week, as it still logged a windfall from sharp gains in oil and gas prices this year.
