Why is CNOOC stock sliding today?

CNOOC stock fell 2.3% to HK$23.96 on Tuesday as a sharp collapse in global crude oil prices — sparked some reported diplomatic progress in U.S.-Iran peace negotiations — hammered energy producers across Asia.

Brent crude tumbled sharply after Iran’s supreme leader granted negotiators authority to pursue a peace deal, easing market fears about prolonged disruptions to Middle East oil supplies and reversing much of October’s geopolitical risk premium in crude prices.

But oil rose marginally on Tuesday after a report said the U.S. had attacked Iran’s Qeshm island, sparking fears that Washington could resume its offensive against Iran after the midterm elections this week.

The selling in CNOOC came despite a constructive analyst backdrop: JPMorgan recently raised its price target on the stock to HK$31.50 while maintaining an Overweight rating, and Citi reaffirmed its Buy rating with a HK$33 target even after CNOOC’s Q3 results included a one-time overseas asset impairment of RMB 7.2 billion that caused quarterly profit to fall sharply versus the prior quarter.

The post-earnings northbound buying enthusiasm from November 2 faded quickly as the macro oil shock took center stage.

CNOOC’s sector peers felt the same pressure, with PetroChina also declining meaningfully on the same crude price catalyst. The Hang Seng Index itself held up relatively well on the day.
