Why is Mitsubishi Corp stock surging today?

Mitsubishi Corp. stock surged 5.4% to ¥5,122 on Thursday after Berkshire Hathaway’s newly installed CEO Greg Abel told Nikkei the U.S. investment giant is considering deepening its positions in Japan’s five largest trading houses.

Abel, who took the helm at Berkshire on January 1, 2026, also appeared on CNBC and stated that Berkshire intends to hold these stakes "for many decades," framing the investments as a cornerstone of the firm’s long-term international strategy rather than a legacy position inherited from Warren Buffett.

Abel’s comments carried additional weight because he simultaneously addressed a key market concern: the surge in Japanese government bond yields to multi-decade highs. He argued that rising yields do not pose a significant threat to the trading houses’ business models, effectively removing a macro overhang that had weighed on the sector.

This reassurance, combined with the prospect of further Berkshire buying, gave investors a compelling reason to accumulate shares.

The catalyst produced a clear rally across the entire sogo shosha complex — Itochu, Mitsui, Sumitomo, and Marubeni all moved higher alongside Mitsubishi, and trading houses collectively ranked among the biggest gainers on the Topix benchmark during the session.

Mitsubishi led gains among its peers, given that it is Berkshire’s largest holding in the group. The hedge fund holds a 10.8% stake in the trading house worth $9.21 billion as of end-2025.

The five helped keep Japan’s Nikkei 225 in positive territory on Thursday.
