Why is LKQ stock crashing today?
LKQ stock dropped 13.0% in pre-open trading after the company released preliminary, unaudited third-quarter 2026 results that revealed a dramatic reversal from profitability, alongside a full withdrawal of its annual guidance and sweeping leadership changes. The preliminary figures showed revenue of $3.32 billion compared with $3.50 billion in the third quarter of 2025, a net loss of $16 million to $32 million versus net income of $178 million a year earlier, and adjusted diluted EPS of $0.47 to $0.53, down sharply from $0.84. The quarter’s underperformance primarily reflected operational disruptions tied to the ERP implementation in Germany and volume declines in the United Kingdom and Benelux.
The leadership shakeup compounded the financial shock. LKQ announced the appointment of Salvatore A. Abbate as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective December 15, 2026, succeeding Justin Jude, who departed the company effective today. Europe head Andy Hamilton also departed immediately, and the board engaged Alvarez & Marsal to advise the company on its European operations. Adding to the pressure, institutional investor Cooke & Bieler cut its LKQ stake by 28.2% in the third quarter, selling 1.03 million shares ahead of the results.
On the broader market front, U.S. equities were modestly in the red today, with the S&P 500 off 0.3%, the Dow Jones down 0.8%, and the Nasdaq slipping 0.2% — a soft but not catastrophic backdrop that did nothing to cushion LKQ’s company-specific collapse. Analysts had already expected LKQ to report a year-over-year decline in earnings and revenue for the September quarter, reflecting pressure on recent operating performance, and the company had exceeded consensus EPS forecasts only once in the last four quarters. The stock was already trading near its 52-week low of $21.17 before today’s news.
The combination of a far-worse-than-anticipated preliminary earnings print, a complete abandonment of full-year guidance, and the simultaneous exit of two senior executives created a perfect storm for sellers. While the Specialty segment was only modestly below expectations and North America performed in line with company expectations despite softer market conditions, the severity of the European deterioration — with segment EBITDA margin nearly halving year-over-year — left investors with little reason to hold ahead of the full Q3 report due October 29.
