Why is I-80 Gold stock sliding today?
Shares of I-80 Gold Corp fell nearly 5% in pre-open trading after the Nevada-focused gold miner reported third-quarter results that missed analyst expectations on both earnings and production, while also cutting its full-year output outlook. The company posted a non-GAAP loss of $0.06 per share, missing expectations by $0.04. Compounding the disappointment, i-80 Gold now expects 2026 gold production to fall in the lower half of its guidance range after changing its plan for Archimedes oxide material.
The underlying operational details offered little comfort. Gold production fell to 11,685 ounces from 12,428 ounces a year earlier, while the net loss widened to $48.4 million from $41.9 million in the same period of 2025. The company also used $32.5 million in operating cash during the quarter, compared with $15.2 million a year earlier — a trend that raises questions about cash burn as development spending accelerates. Short interest stands at 18.1% of the float with 15.9 days to cover, a dynamic that can magnify selling pressure when negative news surfaces.
Gold prices are also retreating, with spot gold pulling back toward $3,920, removing a key tailwind that had supported the precious metals sector. Freedom Broker had maintained its Buy rating last month, raising its price target to $2.90 from $2.80, but that prior optimism is being tested by today’s earnings-driven selloff.
Taken together, the earnings miss, the production guidance cut, and a softening gold price have converged to push IAUX sharply lower in pre-market. Archimedes underground remains on schedule to begin production mining by year-end 2026, which may provide some reassurance on the call this morning, but near-term sentiment has clearly shifted as investors reassess the pace of the company’s ramp-up toward its mid-tier production targets.
