Why is HDFC Bank stock rising today?

HDFC Bank stock rose 2.1% to ₹722.85 on Tuesday, with the move driven primarily by continued optimism surrounding the bank’s leadership transition after MD & CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan confirmed he would not seek reappointment after his retirement effective October 26.

HDFC said over the weekend it had submitted two candidates to the Reserve Bank of India, with local media reports stating that the two were HDFC Bank Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance CEO Anup Bagchi.

Investors appear to be treating the succession process as an opportunity for the bank to reset its governance narrative and accelerate a growth strategy that has disappointed markets over the past year.

Supporting the move, global brokerages including Nomura, Citi, and Jefferies have argued that a credible successor could become a meaningful re-rating catalyst for the stock. Bharucha has been identified as the leading internal candidate, while former SBI chairman Dinesh Khara has also emerged as a prominent external contender — keeping succession speculation constructive and broadly supportive of sentiment.

HDFC rose past a 0.1% gain in the Nifty 50 index.
