Why is First Solar stock surging today?

First Solar stock surged 8.1% in pre-open trading today after Democrats secured control of both the House and Senate in the U.S. midterm elections, reflecting investor optimism about enhanced renewable energy policies that could directly benefit the domestic solar manufacturing sector.

The political development granting Democrats control of both chambers has sparked renewed enthusiasm for renewable energy investments, with First Solar widely seen as one of the primary beneficiaries given its position as the leading U.S.-based thin-film solar module manufacturer.

Adding to the bullish momentum, Mizuho raised its price target on First Solar shares ahead of today’s session. Mizuho lifted its target to $328 from $324 while maintaining an Outperform rating, increasing its discounted cash flow-based price target as expectations of elevated average selling prices remain unchanged and the analysis reflects the 45X tax credit on the balance sheet.

The company also recently authorized a $500 million share buyback program, reflecting management’s outlook on long-term cash generation, which has provided an additional floor of support for the stock.

This political shift has energized the solar sector broadly, with other solar stocks and ETFs also experiencing notable gains. Solar names in the U.S. advanced on the alternative trading system Blue Ocean — Enphase Energy and SolarEdge Technologies both advanced as much as 12%, while Sunrun climbed 8.7% on the platform. Meanwhile, the broader U.S. equity market is posting modest gains, with the S&P 500 up 0.35% and the Nasdaq up 0.21%, providing a generally supportive but unremarkable backdrop that underscores how sector-specific today’s move truly is.

The combination of a clear political catalyst, a supportive analyst action from Mizuho, and a sector-wide re-rating of solar names has converged to push First Solar sharply higher in pre-market trading. The stock, which had been trading near multi-year lows and well below its 52-week high of $320.95, is finding renewed buying interest as investors reassess the policy landscape for domestic clean energy producers under a newly Democrat-controlled Congress.
