Why is Deutsche Telekom stock rallying today?

Deutsche Telekom stock rose 2.3% during today’s session after Bloomberg reported that the German telecommunications giant has stepped back from submitting a formal bid to fully acquire its U.S. subsidiary T-Mobile US, pausing what would have been the largest public merger ever attempted.

The decision was attributed to internal resistance from Deutsche Telekom’s works council and concerns that a full combination would dilute the German federal government’s influence over the merged entity.

Markets reacted positively, interpreting the halt as a near-term removal of the dilution overhang that had weighed on the stock since merger speculation intensified earlier this year.

Adding to the momentum, T-Mobile US delivered a strong set of third-quarter results, posting revenue of $23.6 billion — up 7% year-over-year — while raising its full-year targets for operating income and free cash flow.

The carrier added 274,000 postpaid net accounts in Q3, surpassing analyst forecasts, which was particularly meaningful for Deutsche Telekom given that its roughly 53% stake in T-Mobile US accounts for more than 60% of Deutsche Telekom’s total market value.

JPMorgan analyst Akhil Dattani reinforced the constructive tone today, reiterating an "Overweight" rating and a €38 price target, noting that T-Mobile US’s quarterly figures and revised annual guidance were broadly in line with consensus expectations.

On the broader market front, the DAX held up relatively well during the session, while U.S. indices faced headwinds — the S&P 500 slipped 0.4% and the Nasdaq came under more pronounced pressure — limiting any global risk-on tailwind for European equities.

Deutsche Telekom’s outperformance on the day was therefore almost entirely driven by company-specific newsflow rather than a supportive macro backdrop. The stock remains well below its 52-week high of €34.36, reflecting the structural discount that has built up amid prolonged merger uncertainty.

The combination of merger-risk relief, a solid earnings beat from its most valuable asset, and a reaffirmed institutional buy rating created a confluence of positive catalysts that propelled Deutsche Telekom shares to a session high of €25.945 before settling around current levels, demonstrating how quickly sentiment can shift when a major corporate overhang is lifted, even temporarily.
