Why is DBS stock falling today?
DBS Group Holdings Ltd stock fell as much as 2.3% to S$69.18 after the bank’s third-quarter 2026 results missed consensus forecasts.
Net profit fell 5% year-on-year to S$2.81 billion against a Bloomberg estimate of S$2.96 billion — and declining 9% from the prior quarter. The most striking weakness came from the bank’s markets trading desk, where income plunged to just S$152 million, a drop of 65% from the same period a year ago and 68% lower sequentially, as unfavourable equity market conditions took a heavy toll on that revenue stream.
On the brighter side, not all business lines disappointed. Net interest income rose 4% year-on-year to S$3.71 billion, supported by proactive balance sheet hedging, while net fee income grew 6% to S$1.43 billion, with wealth management fees up 9% to S$864 million.
However, net interest margin continued its gradual compression, narrowing nine basis points to 1.87%, a metric that analysts had flagged as a key risk threshold. CEO Tan Su Shan noted that the global economic outlook had grown more uncertain, citing elevated energy prices, tighter financial conditions, and persistent geopolitical risks.
The earnings release lands against a backdrop of sustained pressure on Singapore’s banking sector. The FTSE Straits Times Index — the primary benchmark for Singapore equities — slumped into correction territory this week, amid sustained losses in heavyweight bank stocks.
