Why is HSBC stock dropping 6% today?
HSBC Holdings PLC ADR stock dropped 6.2% in pre-open trading after the bank’s third-quarter 2026 results, released early this morning, fell short of analyst expectations on both earnings and revenue, rattling investors who had been anticipating a stronger performance from Europe’s largest lender.
The headline numbers told a mixed story: while pre-tax profit surged 32% year-over-year to $9.6 billion — aided in part by the absence of $1.4 billion in legal provisions booked in the same quarter last year — reported EPS of $0.42 missed the consensus estimate of $2.21 by a wide margin, and revenue of $18.62 billion came in below the $19.16 billion forecast. A particular concern for investors was the sharp deceleration in the wealth management business, which had grown revenue 15% and 23% in the first two quarters of 2026 but was broadly flat year-on-year in Q3 — a segment that had been one of HSBC’s most closely watched growth engines. The bank also announced a $1 billion share buyback and declared a third interim dividend of $0.10 per share, but these capital return measures were not enough to offset the disappointment on the income side.
The broader U.S. equity market is providing little cushion today, with the S&P 500 essentially flat, the Dow Jones marginally positive, and the NASDAQ slightly in the red. HSBC’s shares had already been trading near the top of their recent range ahead of the results, leaving the stock more vulnerable to a sharp correction on any earnings miss. No significant insider transactions or analyst rating changes have been reported today to counteract the selling pressure.
Taken together, the combination of a substantial earnings miss, a revenue shortfall, and a meaningful slowdown in the bank’s high-growth wealth unit proved too much for the market to absorb, sending the ADR to $85.55 — well below its previous close of $91.21 — and pushing the stock toward its lowest level in several months, even as management maintained its full-year return on tangible equity target of at least 17%.
