Why is CoreWeave stock sliding today?

CoreWeave stock is sliding 3.1% in pre-open trading today after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress in the U.S. midterm elections, triggering an immediate selloff in artificial intelligence infrastructure stocks as investors weighed the prospect of a more restrictive regulatory environment for data centers and AI expansion.

The political outcome is hitting neocloud names hardest, with investors bracing for potential rollbacks of tech-friendly tax incentives, heightened antitrust scrutiny, and new restrictions on data center development that several Democratic governor-elects have already signaled support for.

This political risk lands on top of a pre-existing concern that has dogged CoreWeave for weeks: the company’s approximately $35 billion debt load and whether its revenue growth — underpinned by a $104 billion backlog — can outpace rising financing costs. Insider selling has also remained elevated, with company insiders having offloaded more than $382 million worth of shares over the past 90 days.

The broader market is not confirming the move — the S&P 500 is up 0.6% and the Nasdaq is advancing 0.5% — meaning CoreWeave is sharply underperforming its peers on company and sector-specific political risk.

The stock had only partially recovered on Tuesday, bouncing 6.3% after Monday’s steep 8.6% decline had pushed shares within cents of their 52-week low of $49.46, leaving the technical picture still deeply bearish, with the stock trading well below its 20-day and 200-day moving averages.

Taken together, the Democratic midterm sweep has reignited regulatory risk for AI infrastructure providers at a moment when CoreWeave’s chart, balance sheet, and insider activity were already flashing caution signals — and with Q3 earnings due on November 10, traders appear unwilling to absorb additional uncertainty, keeping the stock under pressure in pre-market.
