Why is Bloom Energy stock surging today?

Bloom Energy Corp stock is surging 7.2% in pre-open trading after Democrats gained control of both the Senate and the House in the U.S. midterm elections.

Moreover, Barclays upgraded the power generation company from Equal Weight to Overweight, setting a $289 price target, while the company simultaneously unveiled a non-binding memorandum of understanding with California Resources Corp and its carbon management subsidiary, Carbon TerraVault, to evaluate the development of more than 1 gigawatt of solid-oxide fuel cell power generation paired with carbon capture and storage in California.

Announced Monday evening, the agreement envisions Carbon TerraVault handling CO2 transportation and permanent underground storage while Bloom Energy supplies its fuel cell and carbon capture technology, with potential power buyers including utilities, municipalities, and data centers.

Barclays cited a steeper-than-expected demand inflection as the core rationale for its upgrade, pointing to customer deposits that jumped from $78 million at the end of 2025 to $661 million in Q3 2026 — with roughly $300 million added in the third quarter alone — as evidence of robust underlying contract momentum.

Oppenheimer, meanwhile, reiterated a Perform rating, viewing the California partnership as validation of fuel cell technology’s role in delivering carbon capture alongside baseload power, while cautioning that the agreement lacks binding financial commitments. A Form 144 filing on November 4 also indicated a potential sale of restricted shares by an insider or affiliate, though this did not appear to weigh on sentiment.

The broader market provided a constructive backdrop, with the S&P 500 gaining +0.9%, the Dow Jones +1.4%, and the Nasdaq +1.0% on the day, buoyed by a rally following U.S. midterm election results.

The Federal Reserve had held interest rates steady at 3.75%–4.00% at its most recent meeting, removing a key source of uncertainty for capital-intensive clean energy companies. Sector peers also caught a tailwind from Bloom’s move, with FuelCell Energy and GE Vernova both trading higher in sympathy.

The combination of a high-profile analyst upgrade, a strategically significant carbon capture partnership, and a supportive macro environment proved powerful enough to reverse weeks of selling pressure tied to concerns about AI data center spending and negative free cash flow, propelling Bloom Energy to trade at $229.49 in pre-market — well above its prior session’s close of $214.01.
