Why is Autoliv stock sliding today?
Shares of Autoliv fell 6.3% in pre-open trading after the company released its third-quarter 2026 financial results before the market opened today, delivering a mixed-to-disappointing report that sent the stock to $111.44.
Adjusted EPS of $2.19 missed the $2.31 estimate, while sales of $2.693 billion fell short of the $2.734 billion estimate. Making matters worse for investors, additional headwinds narrowed the company’s full-year adjusted operating margin expectation to around 10.5%, the low end of its previous range of around 10.5% to 11%.
The earnings miss did not arrive in a vacuum. Analyst sentiment had deteriorated notably in recent months — while the EPS consensus held relatively stable over the prior 30 days, over the past 90 days analysts had slashed their earnings outlook by more than 20% from $2.80.
On the cost side, raw materials, logistics, flooding in Thailand, and lower call-off accuracy added cost headwinds, which the company largely offset through labor efficiency, material savings, and negotiations. Bright spots were limited to Asia, where sales in India grew nearly 30% and sales to Chinese automakers grew more than 20%.
The broader market provided little cushion. The S&P 500 is modestly lower at -0.2% and the Dow Jones is off -0.6%, reflecting a cautious tone across equities. The automobile manufacturing group has generally underperformed, with share prices down on average over the last month.
The stock was already heading into the report under pressure, as the year-over-year comparison painted a picture of stagnation, with the consensus implying a decline in earnings alongside modest revenue growth of just 0.4% versus Q3 2025.
The combination of a headline earnings miss, a revenue shortfall, and a guidance trim to the low end of the margin range proved to be too much for the market to absorb. The company’s full-year 2026 guidance calls for around 0% organic sales growth, around 2.5% positive FX impact on net sales, around 10.5% adjusted operating margin, and around $1.2 billion in operating cash flow — a framework that leaves limited room for upside surprise and reinforces the cautious stance that has weighed on the stock throughout 2026.
