Autoliv earnings analysis: questions answered and next catalysts

Autoliv Inc (ALV) reported Q3 2026 on Oct 23, 2026. Adjusted EPS of $2.19 missed the $2.26 estimate (-3.10%), and revenue of $2.69B came in under the $2.73B consensus. The stock is down 5.75% at $112.05 (as of Oct 23, 11:48 AM EDT). That puts it near the lower half of its 52-week range of $99.16–$132.17.

Autoliv Inc (ALV): Trading at $112.05 (Market Cap: ~$8.21B) || YTD: -7.56% || FY2026 EPS est: $10.12 || FY2027 EPS est: $11.93

Questions Answered

  • Is guidance intact? Mostly yes. Organic sales stay around 0%, and operating cash flow stays around $1.2B. Capex improved to about 4% of sales, from under 5%. (Oct 23, 2026)
  • Will margins reach the top of the range? No. The adjusted operating margin is now about 10.5%, the low end of the prior 10.5–11.0% range. This is the main disappointment.
  • Did the market backdrop worsen? Global light vehicle production is expected to fall about 2% in 2026, with Q4 down about 4.5% year over year. Autoliv still assumes it will outperform that market.
  • What about 2027? Management gave no numbers. It expects another record year of product launches. It also expects raw materials to be "as challenging in 2027 as in 2026". (Oct 23, 2026)

Questions Still Open

The Q4 ramp is the whole thesis. Full-year guidance implies a Q4 adjusted operating margin of about 14%. That is far above the roughly 9.5% run-rate earlier in 2026. Management points to:

  • seasonal volume
  • engineering income
  • customer compensation for raw-material inflation
  • litigation-related items

An analyst on the call pressed on how much of this is already secured in negotiations. The call excerpt does not show the answer. Because so much rests on one quarter, any slip would hit estimates hard.

Q4 consensus EPS is $3.41 on $2.83B revenue. That is up from $2.19 in Q3.

Pattern of Reactions

The stock has fallen after three of the last four reports:

QuarterEPS surpriseReaction
Q4 FY25+10.0%-4.70%
Q1 FY26+7.33%+9.01%
Q2 FY260.00%-6.21%
Q3 FY26-3.10%~-5.75% (intraday)

Even beats were sold when the margin path looked back-loaded. Estimates also keep drifting down. The 30-day EPS revision is -0.93%, and the 1-year revision is -14.13%.

Next Catalysts

  • Q4 and FY2026 report (expected around late January 2027): this is the test of the 14% margin and the first 2027 guidance. Management said it will give 2027 details on that call. The consensus date isn’t confirmed, so check the calendar.
  • Raw-material recoveries: the pace of customer compensation decides whether the margin ramp is real.
  • Vehicle production: S&P-type forecasts have been revised down repeatedly, from -1% to -2.5% to about -2%. Another cut would pressure the volume base.
  • China and India growth: earlier in 2026, Autoliv outgrew Chinese OEM production by about 40 percentage points. India organic sales grew 38%. Chinese OEM launches are due later this year.
  • Restructuring savings: the Turkish restructuring is expected to deliver $40M of annual savings, fully realized in 2028.

Bull vs. Bear

Bull: Valuation was already modest before today’s drop, at about 13.2x trailing and 11.4x forward earnings (as of the Oct 22, 2026 preview). Cash flow guidance held. Record launches in 2027 and the consensus FY2027 EPS of $11.93 (+18% over FY2026) imply a recovery.

Bear: The recovery depends on one very strong Q4 and on customers paying for raw-material inflation. Production is weakening, and 2027 has no guidance.

Quoted prices are intraday snapshots and may lag.
