Why is American Tower stock surging today?

American Tower stock surged 3.3% in pre-open trading after Bloomberg reported that SpaceX is in active discussions to secure access to approximately 80,000 U.S. cell sites for a nationwide wireless network buildout.

The development immediately ignited enthusiasm across the tower REIT sector, as SpaceX’s entry as a large-scale tenant could generate multibillion-dollar leasing deals for companies like American Tower, which operates roughly 41,764 tower sites across the U.S. and Canada.

The catalyst arrives at a strategically sensitive moment: American Tower is scheduled to report its Q3 2026 results on October 27, with Wall Street expecting earnings per share of $2.84 and revenue of approximately $2.77 billion.

Analyst sentiment heading into that report remains broadly constructive, with a consensus "Moderate Buy" rating and an average price target well above current levels — Mizuho, for instance, recently raised its target to $208 with an Outperform rating.

The SpaceX news also produced a clear split within the communications sector. Peer tower operator Crown Castle rallied sharply alongside American Tower on the prospect of a powerful new tenant, while major U.S. telecom carriers Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile each fell more than 3% as investors weighed the competitive threat of SpaceX entering the wireless market.

The broader U.S. equity market provided no meaningful tailwind, with the S&P 500 slipping 0.2% and the Dow Jones declining 0.6%.

Taken together, the combination of a transformative potential customer in SpaceX, a favorable pre-earnings setup, and strong institutional ownership created a powerful convergence of catalysts that drove American Tower sharply higher in pre-market trading, well outpacing the flat-to-negative broader market backdrop.
