Tower stocks surge on SpaceX wireless expansion: Buy the rally?
The gap has already opened. Tower stocks have jumped well beyond the first headlines. As of 8:53 AM EDT, Crown Castle (CCI) is $89.68 (+13.76%) premarket, against a $78.83 close on Oct 22. American Tower (AMT) is $201.50 (+10.98%), against a $181.57 close.
Early reports put the gains at 7.5% and 3.3%. They have since roughly doubled or tripled. Anyone joining now pays a very different price from the one that first prompted the question. Premarket volume is thin, so these prints can reverse quickly at the open.
Crown Castle (CCI): premarket $89.68 || 52W range $65.32–$99.21 || 1Y −19.78% || Market cap $33.54B
American Tower (AMT): premarket $201.50 || 52W range $160.06–$196.08 || 1Y −4.59% || Market cap $84.6B
AMT’s premarket price is above its 52-week high of $196.08. This is a stock-specific repricing, not a market move.
The Bull Case
- Credible talks: Bloomberg reports SpaceX is negotiating for at least 80,000 sites, about half of the 158,500 U.S. towers. Crown Castle is named directly. Its CEO said on Oct 21 that it is talking to "all parties."
- Valuation gap: Truist’s Matthew Niknam notes towers trade at about 15x 2027 FFO. That is roughly 5 turns below data centers. He also says the news undercuts the bear case that satellites make towers obsolete.
- Earnings catalyst: AMT reports Q3 on Oct 27. Consensus is EPS of $2.84 and revenue of about $2.77B.
The Bear Case
- No contracts yet: Niknam says the talks fall "far short" of signed master lease agreements. Some may see them as a negotiating tactic aimed at the national carriers.
- Carrier risk: Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all fell more than 3%. They are the towers’ biggest tenants. If a fourth network pressures carrier economics, that could eventually weaken the tenant base.
- Cost of the build: TD Cowen estimates a terrestrial network could cost more than $80B. The plan could stall or shrink.
- Price already moved: A 11–14% repricing on an unsigned deal bakes in a lot of success.
What the Evidence Says
The fundamental argument for towers is real and analysts back it. The entry price is the problem. A headline-driven premarket spike has historically been prone to fading, especially when the news is a negotiation and not a signed lease. Because CCI is down about 20% over one year, part of this move is a rebound. AMT is up only about 3.6% year to date, so it has less ground to recover.
Investors weighing this might consider:
- Waiting for the regular-session open and volume to confirm the move.
- Watching AMT’s Oct 27 results for commentary on SpaceX and satellite tenants.
- Watching for any signed lease announcement, which would matter far more than the report.
Premarket quotes are as of Oct 23, 8:53 AM EDT. Closing prices are as of Oct 22, 3:59 PM EDT.
