Vertex Tops Citi’s Biotech Picks After Crinetics Deal Completion

Citigroup analyst Geoff Meacham has identified top opportunities in the biotech sector, with Vertex Pharmaceuticals leading the rankings amid its strategic acquisition moves.

In a recent note, Meacham highlighted key developments that position certain biotech companies favorably for investors seeking exposure to the sector. The analysis focuses on companies demonstrating strong growth potential through strategic transactions and pipeline development.

1. Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:VRTX) - Vertex announced the completion of its acquisition of Crinetics Pharmaceuticals, valued at $10 billion in equity or $8.8 billion net of acquired cash, after receiving regulatory clearance and shareholder approval. The deal establishes endocrinology as the newest pillar for Vertex’s commercial and clinical portfolio. The acquisition brings immediate commercial revenue through PALSONIFY, the first and only once-daily oral therapy approved for acromegaly. The transaction also preserves pipeline opportunities with atumelnant, which remains in phase 3 development for congenital adrenal hyperplasia and phase 2 development in Cushing’s syndrome. Endocrinology now joins cystic fibrosis, hematology, pain, and renal as a key strategic growth platform supporting diversification beyond CF. Citigroup projects PALSONIFY sales of $700 million by 2030, with additional upside potential from atumelnant. The firm maintains a Buy rating on Vertex with a $585 price target. Vertex plans to disclose full financial details during its third quarter 2026 earnings call on November 2. The company continues to expect the transaction to become accretive to non-GAAP operating income in 2029. As part of the announcement, Vertex expanded responsibilities for several senior executives. Charles Wagner will immediately assume responsibility for the Crinetics integration as part of an expanded Chief Operating Officer role. Current Senior Vice President Finance Jonathan Poole will become Chief Financial Officer on January 1, 2027, and Jasper van Grunsven joins as Executive Vice President, Chief Pain and New Product Planning Officer on September 8.

In other developments, Vertex Pharmaceuticals was added to Bank of America’s US 1 List of top investment ideas. Additionally, several firms, including RBC Capital and BMO Capital, reiterated Outperform ratings after a competing cystic fibrosis drug failed a mid-stage trial.
