A market that is not as quiet as the index suggests

The Federal Open Market Committee begins a two-day meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 27, with its decision due Wednesday afternoon. Investing.com’s Fed Rate Monitor, updated at 9:15 p.m. ET on Oct. 26, put the probability of no change at Wednesday’s meeting at 87.4%, with a 12.6% chance of an increase from the current 3.75%-4.00% target range. The same tool prices a 78.5% chance of a hike by the Dec. 9 meeting. Alphabet and Microsoft report after Wednesday’s close, Amazon follows on Thursday alongside the first estimate of third-quarter GDP and the September core PCE reading.

US stocks closed Monday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.28% at 52,361.52, the S&P 500 up 0.70% at 7,676.80 and the Nasdaq Composite up 0.82% at 26,169.38. Those modest moves disguise an unusually wide October. Through Monday’s close the S&P 500 Health Care index was up 7.8% for the month and the Dow 2.8%, while the S&P 500 itself was up 0.1%, the Russell 1000 down 0.4% and the S&P Midcap 400 down 0.5%. Energy led every sector. A flat index print is not calm; it is large opposite moves cancelling each other out.
