Earnings review: AI-driven names rewarded as guidance trumps beats
Earnings review: AI-driven names rewarded as guidance trumps beats
Earnings beats were widespread this week, but stock reactions were not. Companies with AI-driven revenue were rewarded. Companies with soft guidance were punished even after clean beats. The market is paying for forward visibility, not for past-quarter beats. Figures below come from the earnings calendar (Oct 19–22, 2026, as of Oct 23 at 4:12 PM EDT) and cover only part of Thursday’s reports.
Scorecard
| Company | EPS (actual vs est.) | Revenue (actual vs est.) | Reaction | Take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Platforms (META) | $7.40 vs $3.57 | $64.6B vs $63.34B | ~+2.5% after hours | Strong guidance mattered more than the beat |
| SpaceX (SPCX) | $0.35 vs $0.13 | $14.58B vs $12.87B | +7.79% to $159.31 | AI now more than half of revenue |
| Netflix (NFLX) | $0.87 vs $0.82 | $12.87B vs $12.87B | ~-4% | Weak Q4 outlook outweighed the beat |
| Tesla (TSLA) | $0.48 vs $0.45 | $28.05B vs $27.92B | >-4% after hours | Beat didn’t matter; the bar was high |
| Texas Instruments (TXN) | $2.62 vs $2.42 | $6.06B vs $5.92B | n/a | Healthy analog and industrial demand |
| Capital One Financial (COF) | $6.69 vs $5.50 | $16.3B vs $16.25B | n/a | Credit looks resilient |
| PulteGroup (PHM) | $2.53 vs $2.65 | $3.9B vs $4.16B | n/a | Housing is the soft spot |
| Blackstone (BX) | $1.32 vs $1.29 | $3.06B vs $3.35B | n/a | Beat on EPS, miss on revenue |
Signal 1: AI spending is still the engine
The Nasdaq closed Wednesday at 26,702.86 and was up 2.6% from last Friday’s low. That followed its worst week since spring, when worries about funding AI spending, higher yields and higher oil prices weighed on it. SpaceX (SPCX) and Meta supplied the rebound. Super Micro Computer also raised its quarterly revenue forecast by $4B, which lifted Dell and HPE. Read more (Oct 22, 2026)
Because AI demand is showing up as revenue, the funding worries eased for now.
Signal 2: Beats are priced in
Several beats ended in declines, which points to a demanding market:
- Netflix and Tesla: both beat on EPS but fell.
- Southern Copper: record quarter, but the shares fell 6.78% to $184.64 on the Tía María delay and no detailed 2027 guidance. (Oct 22, 2026)
- Besi: strong growth, but shares slipped 3.32% premarket on a flat Q4 outlook. (Oct 22, 2026)
Signal 3: Cracks at the edges
- Autos and suppliers: Visteon fell 4.23% on a profit miss and lower cash-flow guidance. Gentherm fell 3.83% on an EPS miss. Both cited margin and cost pressure. (Oct 22, 2026)
- Regional banks: Flagstar Bank (FLG) missed ($0.01 vs $0.07 EPS), cut guidance, suspended Q4 buybacks, and shares fell 5.77% premarket. It blamed credit pressure and higher-for-longer rates. Larger lenders like Capital One and Fifth Third looked healthier. (Oct 23, 2026)
- Housing and leisure: PulteGroup missed on both lines, as did Las Vegas Sands.
- Defensive winners: Boston Beer jumped 7.65% to $195.72 on margin strength and better guidance. Eni rose 2.4% premarket on a bigger buyback and higher cash-flow guidance. (Oct 22, 2026)
What it means
- Bull case: AI revenue is real, big-bank credit holds up, and industrials and healthcare mostly beat.
- Bear case: The market is punishing any soft guidance. Housing and regional banks show strain, and rates and oil remain risks.
- Net read: Leadership is narrow, with AI-linked names carrying the market.
Reaction data is available only for names covered in the news flow, and some Thursday and Friday reports weren’t reviewed.
