Caterpillar stock falls 4% after Erste Group downgrade

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT) shares dropped 4% on Monday after Erste Group downgraded the stock from Buy to Hold.

Erste Group analyst Hans Engel cut his rating on the heavy equipment manufacturer, citing valuation concerns and margin pressures. The analyst noted that both the gross margin and operating margin declined YoY in the last quarter.

"Caterpillar has an operating margin that is above average compared to its peers and a very high return on equity. The company has a generally robust order intake, particularly in the Energy Systems segment. On the negative side, both the gross margin and the operating margin declined year-over-year in the last quarter. Based on the P/E ratio, the stock is trading at a significant premium relative to the sector average. The potential for further price gains is therefore severely limited," the analyst commented.

Despite acknowledging Caterpillar’s above-average operating margin and high return on equity, along with robust order intake in the Energy Systems segment, Engel pointed to the stock’s premium valuation as a limiting factor for additional upside.
