Volatility has been rising in U.S. markets in recent weeks.
Q3 earnings, changing expectations for Fed policy, and the war in Iran have severely punished certain U.S. stocks.

Wall Street closed higher on Wednesday for the third consecutive session after the Federal Reserve, as expected, left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75% to 4%. The S&P 500 gained 0.28% to 7,743.98 points, the Dow Jones rose 0.19% to 52,475.10 points, and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.27%.
However, this relatively calm trading session should not obscure the sharp increase in volatility across U.S. markets in recent weeks. The VIX, nicknamed the “fear index,” climbed from 14.84 points on October 9 to nearly 20 points on October 16—its highest level in four months—after surging more than 21% in a single session. It was still trading at 17.52 points on Tuesday, above its levels at the beginning of the month.
Several factors are fueling this nervousness. First, expectations for Fed policy have fluctuated widely. A month ago, the market assigned roughly a 64% probability to an interest rate hike in October. That probability had fallen to around 11% on the eve of the meeting. Although the Fed ultimately opted to leave rates unchanged, it continues to view inflation as too high, and the prospect of further tightening has now been pushed back to December.
The war in Iran is also weighing on markets, with oil prices remaining above $100 per barrel since the conflict began. On Wednesday alone, an attack on a Saudi refinery by the Houthis, who are backed by Tehran, reignited concerns about supply disruptions. Persistent questions about the profitability of massive investments in artificial intelligence are adding to the uncertainty.
Finally, the third-quarter earnings season is in full swing, with market reactions sometimes proving brutal. According to Goldman Sachs, around 80% of S&P 500 companies that have already reported results have beaten expectations, yet markets have often rewarded these positive surprises only modestly. For example, Fortinet plunged in after-hours trading on Wednesday despite reporting better-than-expected results and raising its forecasts, while Coca-Cola fell despite raising its annual targets for the third consecutive time. Conversely, Chipotle rose after the close on the back of strong sales.
The result is a market in which some stocks have climbed sharply in recent weeks, while others have been heavily punished—sometimes excessively, given their underlying fundamentals.
These 8 Beaten-Down U.S. Stocks Show Significant Rebound Potential
To identify stocks whose recent declines could present an opportunity, we examined InvestingPro’s Fair Value metric, which combines several established valuation models, alongside analysts’ price targets.
We therefore used the Investing.com screener to identify U.S. stocks meeting the following criteria:

A decline of more than 15% over the past month
Upside potential of more than 20% according to InvestingPro Fair Value
Upside potential of more than 20% based on the average analyst price target

Specifically, these U.S. stocks have fallen between 16% and 28.7% over the past month, yet offer upside potential ranging from 20.7% to 62.9% according to Fair Value estimates and from 20.8% to 131.2% based on analyst consensus.
Among these stocks are:
SanDisk (SNDK), a specialist in NAND flash memory and solid-state drives (SSDs), was one of the major beneficiaries of the AI boom before its stock fell 23.8% in a month. This decline contrasts with the company’s spectacular fundamentals: in fiscal 2026, revenue surged 175% to $20.2 billion, and the company beat consensus estimates in each of its last four quarters. However, the market is questioning the direction of NAND prices and the company’s ability to sustain such high margins. The next earnings report is due on October 29 after the Wall Street closing bell, with EPS expected to come in at around $45. Fair Value indicates upside potential of 21.3%, while analysts are considerably more optimistic, projecting gains of 52.6%.
Western Digital (WDC), which has refocused on high-capacity hard drives that are now essential for storing the vast amounts of data generated by AI at a reasonable cost. Nevertheless, the stock has fallen 16% in a month, even though the company’s October 22 earnings report exceeded expectations, with adjusted EPS of $4.64 versus the forecast of $4.08 and revenue up 55% to $4.38 billion. The company also raised its quarterly dividend by 17% and expects revenue growth of 66% to 72% this quarter. It is a familiar pattern: strong results are met with a market reaction driven by fears that the current growth cycle may be nearing its end. Fair Value indicates upside potential of 20.7%, while analyst consensus points to a potential gain of 54.7%.
However, the other stocks on the list offer even greater upside potential according to Fair Value estimates.
