South African rand rises as dollar weakens, gold gains

The South African rand strengthened on Thursday as the U.S. dollar weakened and gold prices climbed, with market participants looking ahead to U.S. employment data for signals about Federal Reserve policy direction.

The rand traded at 16.0075 per dollar at 1450 GMT, gaining approximately 0.3% from its prior close.

South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond also gained ground, moving in line with rising gold prices. The bond yield dropped 7 basis points to 8.58%. South Africa ranks among the world’s leading exporters of the precious metal.

On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Top-40 index rose 1.4%, with Impala Platinum (JSE:IMPJ) and MTN Group (JSE:MTNJ) posting some of the session’s largest gains.

The U.S. dollar index fell 0.6% against a basket of currencies, reducing pressure on emerging market currencies.

Market focus has shifted to Friday’s non-farm payrolls report following Wednesday’s ADP employment data, which indicated moderate growth in U.S. private sector payrolls during August.

The rand typically responds to global factors including U.S. economic data alongside domestic economic indicators.
