Two powerful earthquakes strike off coast of Vanuatu
A tsunami warning came soon after the quakes
Two large earthquakes have struck off the coast of Vanuatu, triggering a tsunami warning.
The earthquakes were recorded at 3.31am and 3.35am BST on Saturday.
The first earthquake was originally measured as a magnitude 7.2, but the United States Geological Survey later downgraded it to 6.9.
Its epicentre was about 197km west-northwest of Port-Olry, at a depth of 10km.
The second earthquake, measured as magnitude 6.3, was also at a depth of 10km, and struck about 170km northwest of Port-Olry.
Hazardous tsunami waves were possible along coastlines within 300km of the quake’s epicentre, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.
“Persons located in threatened coastal areas should stay alert for information and follow instructions from national and local authorities.”
The centre’s threat forecast identified Vanuatu as the area that could be affected.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
