Five dead and more than a dozen injured after shooting in Krakow city centre
An air ambulance was on the scene on Saturday following a shooting that killed at least five people
At least five people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a drive-by shooting in Krakow city centre on Saturday, authorities said.
The gunman drove into the busy market square around 3pm local time and began firing shots at random people from the moving car, the Małopolska police reported, adding that a suspect had been arrested.
They said the suspect had been shot and taken to hospital in police custody, while emergency services were still working at the scene. The gunman was not immediately identified.
Two police officers were among those injured in the shooting, fire department spokesperson Hubert Ciepły added, with police and emergency services, including an air ambulance, at the scene.
The fire department urged locals to stay away from the area around the main market square, which they said was still a ‘hot zone’ an hour after the incident.
Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said in a statement on social media: “The police are investigating the background and all the circumstances of the attack.”
Authorities earlier reported two people had been killed and 10 injured in Saturday’s incident.
