Slurring Trump makes stunning admission after devastating night of midterms losses
President Donald Trump called into Fox News as Democrats seized back control of House and Senate on historic night and struck an unusually reflective tone, even complimenting his opponents
After Republicans suffered bruising losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections, President Donald Trump offered his opponents a rare and unexpected compliment: “The Democrats did a good job.”
Trump’s praise came during a late-night interview with Fox News as the opposition were projected to take control of both the House and Senate, dealing the GOP a sweeping rebuke and setting up two years of divided government, which has since been confirmed by a resounding set of results.
Speaking by phone and occasionally slurring his words, the president deflected blame for his party’s losses onto lackluster Republican candidates, some of whom – like Ken Paxton and Darline Graham – even lost in GOP strongholds such as Texas and South Carolina.
Trump expressed surprise at the scale of the Republicans’ losses, saying the turnout at his red state rallies in recent months had led him to expect a stronger showing.
Still, he did not hesitate to congratulate Democrats – the same opponents he has repeatedly mocked as “Dumocrats,” labeled “Jihadists and Communists,” and accused of brazenly cheating to steal elections.

“I think the Democrats did a good job; I really do,” the 80-year-old president told Fox. “They fought hard. They were, you know, they’ve been fighting for a long time. They’ve been fighting me for a long time.
“They’ve been looking for this one for 11 years, and they finally got it.”
Trump’s call into Fox was noteworthy given that he had twice attacked the conservative cable news network on Truth Social that evening, declaring in one post: “Fox News Ratings are way down (27 percent!) because they’re spending too much time covering the Trump Deranged Dumocrats! All of those people who used to watch Fox, and no longer do, get it. It’s them, not me.”
In a follow-up, he attacked the network for having former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio on air as a guest, fuming: “Fox News bears responsibility for these losses by constantly and consistently putting on the Dumocrat opposition, and worse.”
His objections did not stop him joining the network’s election night coverage twice, however.
By early Wednesday morning, Democrats were projected to have gained at least seven Senate seats along with at least 25 in the House, including in GOP-held districts in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as part of a “Blue Tsunami” that completely oveturns the balance of power on Capitol Hill for the conclusion of Trump’s second term.
The president signaled a willingness to work with Democrats over the next two years, but drew firm limits, ruling out compromise on immigration and transgender issues.
“The power of veto is one of the stronger powers that a president has, and they’ll send over things that are insane, and I’ll veto them,” Trump reminded Fox.
Also on election night, he had posted an image to Truth Social of a red MAGA-style cap with the word “Veto” printed on it, making clear his intention to block Democratic legislation when it arrives in the Oval Office for his signature.
Asked to assess his own role in his party’s losses, Trump deflected responsibility. Some defeated candidates had not been loyal enough, he said. “In other cases, they just didn’t inspire the people to get out and vote,” he added.

“And I wasn’t on the ballot,” he added, echoing another Truth Social post. That explanation stood in stark contrast to his fall campaign message to supporters: “Pretend I’m on the ballot.”
Trump further downplayed the electoral impact of his decision to go to war in Iran, despite polls showing deep public opposition to the conflict.
“I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran,” he said.
Notably absent from the interview were any allegations of cheating, a charge the president has long leveled against Democrats without evidence.
