Why is Zip Co stock surging today?
Zip Co Ltd stock surged 14.0% to A$1.67 on Monday session, driven chiefly by bargain buying after a brutal sell-off last week which had sent shares plunging nearly 30% after the company disclosed a U.S. fraud incident and a rise in bad debts in its Q1 FY27 trading update.
The primary catalyst today is fresh research from two major brokers. Analyst teams at both Macquarie and UBS argued that the market’s reaction to last week’s update was excessive, pointing to the company’s structurally intact growth story and reiterating Buy ratings with very bullish price targets. Macquarie’s note characterised the stock’s decline as an overreaction given the sector’s long-term growth tailwinds. Adding to the positive tone, Zip filed an ASX announcement this morning updating the market on its active on-market share buyback programme, signalling management’s conviction that the stock is undervalued at current levels.
A technical dynamic is also amplifying the move: Zip carries one of the highest short interest levels on the ASX at 13.3%, making it vulnerable to a sharp short-covering squeeze when positive sentiment shifts. Meanwhile, the underlying Q1 FY27 fundamentals were not without merit — total transaction volume grew 18% year-on-year to $4.6 billion, total income rose 17%, and CEO Cynthia Scott reaffirmed full-year EBTDA guidance of $340 million, up 26% year-on-year.
The broader Australian market provided little tailwind, with the ASX 200 trading flat.
