Why is WPP stock rallying today?

WPP stock rallied 2.5% today after the British advertising giant published its Q3 2026 Trading Update pre-market, revealing that the like-for-like decline in revenue less pass-through costs narrowed to -2.1% in the third quarter, improving from the -2.8% drop recorded in Q2 — a result that came in ahead of the analyst consensus, which had anticipated a steeper -3.2% organic decline.

Total Q3 revenue of £3.27bn rose 0.5% year-on-year, and the company stated that performance in the quarter was in line with its own expectations, reinforcing confidence in the Elevate28 restructuring programme.

Several supporting factors amplified the positive reaction. WPP’s media division returned to growth for the first time in several quarters, posting a 0.3% LFL gain versus a -2.8% contraction in Q2, while the production unit grew 2.5%.

The company also highlighted a series of significant client wins and renewals — including renewed global media partnerships with Coca-Cola and DoorDash, as well as new assignments from Nestlé, Uber, and Waymo — which CEO Cindy Rose described as evidence of "commercial momentum and client confidence."

Adding to the positive tone, adjusted net debt fell to £3bn from £3.6bn a year earlier, and Bernstein SocGen lifted its price target on the stock to GBP 4.10 from GBP 4.00, maintaining its Market Perform rating.

The broader market environment was also constructive for London-listed equities today. The FTSE 100 opened higher, buoyed by a UK budget that contained few market surprises, the US Federal Reserve’s decision to hold interest rates steady at its prior meeting, and a sharp rally in Shell shares.

These macro tailwinds provided a helpful backdrop against which WPP’s company-specific results could resonate more forcefully with investors.

Taken together, the narrowing revenue decline, the media segment’s return to growth, high-profile client renewals, and a reiterated full-year margin guidance of 12%–13% combined to reassure the market that WPP’s turnaround is progressing — even as the company acknowledged that a full return to growth is not expected until 2027.

The stock, which had traded as low as 218.5p over the past 52 weeks, reached a session high of 402.2p before pulling back slightly, reflecting both the relief rally on the results and some residual caution about the pace of recovery.
