Why is Verizon stock sliding today?

Verizon stock slid 3.3% in pre-open trading to reach $43.70, dragged lower after Bloomberg News reported on Thursday evening that SpaceX is negotiating access to at least 80,000 cell sites across the United States, a footprint that would represent roughly half of all purpose-built towers in the country and lay the groundwork for a fourth nationwide wireless carrier.

The prospect of a well-funded new entrant in an already competitive market rattled investors, sending Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile all sharply lower in after-hours and pre-market trading.

Adding to the pressure, AT&T’s third-quarter results — released ahead of Verizon’s own report due Monday — delivered an earnings beat and a raised full-year outlook but still failed to lift sector sentiment, reinforcing concerns about slowing industry growth.

Separately, a Form 144 insider filing was disclosed for Verizon on October 22, signaling a planned sale of restricted securities, while CEO Kyle Malady had already sold 1,100 shares earlier in the week under a pre-arranged trading plan. Bernstein’s analyst Laurent Yoon maintained a Hold rating and a $45.00 price target, offering little upside catalyst to offset the negative news flow.

The broader market provided minimal support, with the S&P 500 edging down 0.2%, the Dow Jones off 0.6%, and the Nasdaq essentially flat. Technically, Verizon was already trading below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages heading into today’s session, leaving the stock vulnerable to a sharper reaction on negative headlines.

Together, the SpaceX competitive threat, soft sector read-through from AT&T’s results, insider activity, and cautious pre-earnings positioning combined to push Verizon to its lowest level in recent weeks, with the stock now sitting closer to the lower end of its 52-week range of $38.54–$51.68 as investors await Monday’s earnings for clearer operational guidance.
