Why is Vale stock sliding today?

Vale stock slid 3.6% in pre-open trading today, pulling to $11.95, after U.S.-listed Brazilian companies were swept up in a broad selloff following the surprise election victory of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who won a historic fourth term over the weekend.

Markets were caught off guard by the outcome, triggering an immediate pullback from Brazilian-linked assets across the board.

The selloff comes ahead of the company’s Q3 2026 results due on October 29. Vale is set to release its Q3 2026 earnings after the market closes on Thursday, October 29.

The setup is particularly uncomfortable: the average analyst EPS estimate for the current quarter stands at $0.33, implying a year-over-year decline of roughly 47.6%, and Vale has missed consensus EPS expectations in each of the three most recent quarters.

Moreover, a relentless series of analyst price target reductions has compounded the selling pressure. Deutsche Bank cut its price target to $15 from $16.50 while maintaining a Hold, flagging weaker margins and volumes ahead of Q3; UBS trimmed its target to $15 from $16.50 with a Neutral stance; Morgan Stanley lowered its target to $15.50 from $16.50, preferring precious metals over base metals; and UBS subsequently pushed its target down again to $14.50 from $15.

Separately, institutional selling added to the overhang, with Mondrian Investment Partners filing a reduction in its VALE stake on October 25.
