Why is the Indian rupee rising sharply today?

The Indian rupee firmed sharply on Thursday, with the USD/INR currency pair sliding 0.6% to 94.408 rupees following driven by a powerful surge in Foreign Currency Non-Resident Bank (FCNR-B) deposits that came in well above market expectations.

Total capital inflows under the RBI’s capital-account measures — including overseas foreign currency borrowings and external commercial borrowings — reached approximately $136.4 billion by end-August, far surpassing forecasts and generating strong demand for the Indian rupee.

The Reserve Bank of India engaged in aggressive forex market intervention in rcent months actively absorbing excess dollar supply and providing a firm floor for the rupee. Analysts note that the pair is trading below both its 20- and 50-day moving averages, reinforcing short- and medium-term bearish technical momentum, while the US Treasury’s expanded bond buyback program has simultaneously softened the broader US dollar by easing financial conditions and reducing Treasury yields.

On the macro front, the rupee’s recovery today is part of a broader trend that has seen USD/INR pull back from its record high of 96.965, supported by RBI intervention, moderating crude oil prices, and a coordinated package of capital-account reforms introduced earlier in 2026.

Persistent geopolitical tensions and India’s structural dependence on imported crude oil remain background headwinds that cap the extent of any rupee rally, though they have not been sufficient to reverse today’s move.
