Why is Strategy stock sliding today?

Strategy Inc shares fell 5.1% in morning trading today, pulling back to $138.63 as Bitcoin’s persistent softness around the low $80,000s — approximately 8% below its recent monthly high — weighed heavily on the company, whose stock is widely regarded as a leveraged proxy on the cryptocurrency. The decline follows a roughly 7.5% surge in the prior session, making profit-taking an additional contributor to the reversal.

A key catalyst amplifying the drop was Strategy’s disclosure that it made no Bitcoin purchases or sales during the week of October 19 through October 25, leaving its total holdings unchanged at 848,517 BTC. Investors who monitor Michael Saylor’s customary Sunday social-media signals for upcoming buys received no such indication last week, heightening concern that the company’s aggressive accumulation pace may be pausing. Instead, Strategy deployed capital toward repurchasing approximately 2.07 million STRC preferred shares for around $204.9 million.

A structural overhang is also weighing on the stock: MSCI approved rule changes in mid-October that could ultimately exclude non-operating companies — including Bitcoin treasury firms like Strategy — from its indexes, with a final list of affected companies expected on November 11 and changes set to take effect after November 30. That potential forced selling from passive funds remains a near-term risk. Ahead of Q3 earnings due October 30, StoneX reiterated a Buy rating on the stock, though broader caution persists.

The broader U.S. equity market is modestly positive today, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both in the green, underscoring that MSTR’s decline is driven by cryptocurrency-specific and company-specific dynamics rather than any macro headwind. The combination of Bitcoin’s softness, the absence of new BTC purchases, profit-taking after the prior session’s rally, and the MSCI exclusion risk has created a confluence of pressures pulling the stock lower in today’s session.
